PHILADELPHIA, PA - Senior Olivia Arizin captured the individual title for the second consecutive year as the Cardinal O'Hara girls' program defended its crown on Saturday afternoon at the 2016 Philadelphia Catholic League Cross Country Championships.
On the boys side, La Salle College repeated as champions in dramatic fashion as it edged Cardinal O'Hara by a mere two points, 30-32.
Despite damp and windy conditions at historic Belmont Plateau, Arizin cruised to a winning time of 19:11.70. Arizin's teammates Eleanor Mancini (19:20.50) and Elizabeth Mancini (19:25.10) finished second and third, respectively, and sophomore Christine Mancini (19:39.10) placed fifth overall as the Lions outdistanced runner-up Archbishop Wood, 19-61.
Senior Kayla Connelly of Lansdale Catholic finished fourth overall in a time of 19:38.90, while Archbishop Wood senior Jessica Nangle (19:57.70) and freshman Olivia Pisacano (20:34.40) of Little Flower finished sixth and seventh overall.
Bonner & Prendie compiled 110 points and earned third place in the girls standings, followed by Lansdale Catholic (112), Archbishop Carroll (134), Little Flower (149), St. Hubert's (155), Archbishop Ryan (195) and John W. Hallahan (259). Bishop McDevitt, Conwell-Egan and Neumann-Goretti had individual runners compete but did not figure into the team standings. The top-15 finishers in the girls race earned All-Catholic first-team distinction, while those placing 16-thru-20 garnered second-team distinction and 21-thru-25 received honorable mention.
Junior Evan Addison (16:18.40) placed second and four additional La Salle College runners (Stephen Paul - fourth, Brendan Price - seventh, Quinn O'Neill - eighth, Vincent Twomey - ninth) joined him in the top nine overall as the Explorers posted a two-point victory over runner-up Cardinal O'Hara.
Senior Ryan James of Cardinal O'Hara seized the individual title with a time of 16:09.70, while senior teammates Gavin Inglis (third), Patrick James (fifth), Billy Donovan (tenth) and junior Jack Becker (13th) rounded out the scoring for the Lions. Senior Sean Brown of Roman finished sixth overall in a time of 16:46.00.
St. Joseph's Prep placed third in the boys standings with 95 points, followed by Roman (136), Father Judge (163), Archbishop Wood (171), Archbishop Carroll (209), Bonner & Prendie (209), Conwell-Egan (253), Lansdale Catholic (260) and Archbishop Ryan (289). Both Bishop McDevitt and Neumann-Goretti had individual runners compete but did not figure into the team standings.
The top-15 finishers in the boys race earned All-Catholic first-team distinction, while places 16-thru-25 received second-team distinction and 26-thru-35 garnered honorable mention.
