PHILADELPHIA, PA -
Sophomore Owen DeAngelis earned a hard-fought three-set win at the No. 2 singles flight to secure La Salle College’s 3-2 victory over St. Joseph’s Prep on Monday afternoon in the finals of the 2017 Philadelphia Catholic League Boys’ Tennis Championship on the campus of Chestnut Hill College.

It marked the 11th straight league championship for the Explorers, who advance to the District XII Championship on May 11 as they seek their seventh consecutive berth in the PIAA Championship.

St. Joseph’s Prep jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as it swept both matches in doubles action.  Freshman Dan Porreca notched a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Jack Crossed to bring La Salle College to within 2-1.  The match was then knotted at 2-2 following a 6-4, 7-5 victory by sophomore Nick Harris versus Joe Wahba of St. Joseph’s Prep.

DeAngelis dropped the first set (5-7) to the Prep’s Mike Haley before rallying for a 7-5, 6-4 win in the final match of the afternoon.
