HERSHEY, PA - Senior Ciani Montgomery scored a career-high 34 points as West Catholic captured its first state title in program history with a 67-56 win over Mohawk on Thursday evening in the finals of the 2021 PIAA Girls' Basketball 3A Championship at the Giant Center.
The Lady Burrs (11-4) also reached the state finals in 2018 but were edged by Bellwood-Antis (45-42).
Montgomery connected on 14-of-18 shots from the field, including 7-of-8 in the opening half, as WC held a 29-26 lead at the intermission. The Lady Burrs started the second half with an 8-0 run, but Mohawk (19-5) closed to within 53-49 with just under four minutes remaining in the game on a three-pointer by Hannah McDaniel. However, Montgomery knocked down consecutive driving layups to push the Lady Burrs' margin to 57-49, and West Catholic closed out the game en route to the program's first-ever state title.
Senior Destiney McPhaul scored 16 points on the evening, including nine in the fourth quarter, and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for WC, while teammate Daziy Wilson scored six of the Lady Burrs' 16 points in the opening quarter.
